Job Summary

The General Dentist is responsible for providing comprehensive preventive, diagnostic, restorative, and therapeutic dental care to patients of all ages. The role involves diagnosing and treating oral diseases, promoting oral health, and delivering high-quality, patient-centered dental services in accordance with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulations, hospital policies, and internationally accepted clinical standards.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive dental examinations and oral health assessments.
  • Diagnose and treat dental diseases, oral infections, and disorders of the teeth, gums, and oral cavity.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical findings and patient needs.
  • Provide preventive dental care, including oral health education, scaling, polishing, and fluoride treatments.
  • Perform restorative dental procedures, including:
    • Dental fillings (composite and amalgam where applicable)
    • Inlays and onlays
    • Crown and bridge preparation
    • Temporary restorations
  • Perform routine tooth extractions and manage uncomplicated dental emergencies.
  • Diagnose and manage periodontal diseases, referring complex cases to a Periodontist when necessary.
  • Perform root canal treatment for uncomplicated endodontic cases within the scope of practice.
  • Diagnose and manage oral lesions, referring suspicious cases for specialist evaluation when appropriate.
  • Prescribe medications, including antibiotics and analgesics, in accordance with DHA regulations.
  • Provide emergency dental care for pain, trauma, infections, and other urgent dental conditions.
  • Refer patients to dental specialists when advanced treatment is required.

Diagnostic Responsibilities

  • Interpret dental radiographs, including:
    • Periapical X-rays
    • Bitewing X-rays
    • Panoramic (OPG) radiographs
    • Cone Beam CT (CBCT), where applicable
  • Assess oral pathology and formulate appropriate treatment plans.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and treatment documentation.

Patient Care

  • Deliver compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered dental care.
  • Educate patients on oral hygiene, disease prevention, nutrition, and post-treatment care.
  • Obtain informed consent before all dental procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure a positive patient experience.
  • Monitor treatment outcomes through appropriate follow-up visits.

Infection Prevention & Safety

  • Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, including sterilization and disinfection procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with standard precautions and occupational health and safety requirements.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized clinical environment.
  • Properly dispose of sharps and clinical waste according to hospital and DHA guidelines.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Dental Specialists, Dental Hygienists, Dental Assistants, Oral Surgeons, Orthodontists, Prosthodontists, Endodontists, Periodontists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions when required.
  • Coordinate patient referrals and continuity of care.

Quality & Compliance

  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
  • Comply with DHA regulations, hospital policies, ethical standards, and clinical governance requirements.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and accreditation activities.
  • Report clinical incidents and adverse events according to hospital policy.

Professional Development

  • Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.
  • Maintain professional licensure and certifications.
  • Stay updated with advances in dental materials, technology, and evidence-based clinical practices.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and mandatory hospital training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), or an equivalent dental qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Valid Dubai Health Authority (DHA) License or DHA Eligibility Letter as a General Dentist.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Experience

  • Minimum 2–3 years of clinical experience as a General Dentist after internship.
  • Experience in restorative, preventive, and emergency dental care.
  • Previous experience in a DHA-licensed dental clinic or hospital is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong knowledge of general dentistry principles and evidence-based treatment protocols.
  • Proficiency in restorative dentistry, preventive care, and routine oral surgical procedures.
  • Ability to interpret dental radiographs and diagnostic investigations.
  • Competency in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and dental practice management systems.
  • Excellent communication and patient counseling skills.
  • Strong clinical judgment and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of DHA regulations, infection control, and healthcare quality standards.

Working Conditions

  • Dental clinic, outpatient department, or hospital dental unit.
  • Standard working hours with occasional evenings, weekends, or emergency coverage as required.
