Job Summary
The Sonographer is responsible for performing high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations to assist physicians in the diagnosis and management of medical conditions. The role includes preparing patients, operating ultrasound equipment, acquiring diagnostic images, ensuring patient safety and comfort, and maintaining accurate documentation in accordance with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) regulations, hospital policies, and international standards of diagnostic imaging.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
- Perform a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations, including:
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Pelvic ultrasound
- Obstetric ultrasound
- Gynecological ultrasound
- Breast ultrasound
- Small parts ultrasound (thyroid, scrotum, soft tissue)
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound
- Vascular Doppler studies
- Renal and urinary tract ultrasound
- Assess patients prior to examinations and obtain relevant clinical history.
- Position patients appropriately to obtain optimal diagnostic images.
- Optimize ultrasound machine settings to produce high-quality images.
- Recognize normal and abnormal sonographic findings and ensure appropriate image acquisition for interpretation by the Radiologist.
- Assist physicians during ultrasound-guided procedures such as biopsies, aspirations, and drainages, where applicable.
Patient Care
- Explain examination procedures and obtain informed consent where required.
- Ensure patient comfort, dignity, privacy, and confidentiality throughout the examination.
- Monitor patients during procedures and respond appropriately to any adverse events.
- Provide clear post-procedure instructions when necessary.
Equipment & Quality Assurance
- Operate, maintain, and perform routine quality checks on ultrasound equipment.
- Report equipment malfunctions to the Biomedical Engineering Department.
- Ensure ultrasound rooms are clean, organized, and adequately stocked with supplies.
- Participate in equipment quality assurance and preventive maintenance programs.
Documentation
- Accurately document examination details in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Radiology Information System (RIS).
- Ensure all diagnostic images are correctly stored in the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
- Maintain patient records in accordance with hospital policies and DHA regulations.
Infection Prevention & Safety
- Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and standard precautions.
- Clean and disinfect ultrasound probes and equipment according to hospital protocols.
- Ensure compliance with patient identification, safety, and confidentiality standards.
- Report incidents, equipment issues, and safety concerns promptly.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with Radiologists, Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Surgeons, Emergency Physicians, Cardiologists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate patient scheduling and workflow with nursing and administrative teams.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions when required.
Quality & Professional Development
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, departmental audits, and accreditation activities.
- Maintain professional competency through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Continuing Medical Education (CME).
- Attend mandatory training programs, including infection control, patient safety, and emergency preparedness.
- Stay updated with advances in ultrasound technology and imaging techniques.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Medical Imaging, or a related healthcare field from a recognized institution.
- Valid Dubai Health Authority (DHA) License or DHA Eligibility Letter as a Sonographer.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Experience
- Minimum 2–3 years of post-qualification experience as a Sonographer in a hospital or diagnostic imaging center.
- Experience in general ultrasound, obstetric and gynecological imaging, and Doppler studies is preferred.
- Previous experience in a DHA-licensed healthcare facility is an advantage.
Knowledge & Skills
- Proficiency in performing a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
- Strong knowledge of ultrasound anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
- Ability to operate ultrasound equipment and optimize image quality.
- Familiarity with PACS, RIS, and Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
- Excellent communication and patient care skills.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of DHA regulations, radiation safety principles (where applicable), and healthcare quality standards.

Working Conditions
- Hospital Radiology Department, Diagnostic Imaging Center, Outpatient Clinics, and Emergency Department.
- Rotating shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as required by operational needs.
- May assist with emergency and bedside ultrasound examinations.
